Hymenoplasty Surgery: In a country like India, virginity is almost like a virtue, and the lack of it, well, a perceived vice. It’s obvious therefore, that there’s a lot at stake when it comes to a woman’s hymen. Now, it needn’t just be sexual intercourse that might cause the hymen to tear, but a host of other reasons like sports and other physical exercises that could cause it to tear.
Before we get to the root of everything, let’s first understand what is this much hyped hymen?
The hymen is a membrane that partially or completely closes the opening of a vagina. Hymens can be thick or stretchy or completely absent. Various activities like swimming, horseback riding, sexual intercourse, medical examination etc. may also cause the hymen to tear or wear off.
For cultural reasons or personal preferences, some women prefer an intact hymen. Hymenoplasty procedure is a surgery which restores the hymen in a vagina. There are three ways to go about it:
- Hymen Stitching: The basic technique in hymenoplasty surgery is to stitch up the broken hymen or to stitch up the remaining hymen. The sutures are generally dissolvable. So, there is no need for the patient to go back to the clinic for removing the sutures. A local or general anaesthesia may be used during the procedure to reduce pain or discomfort. It takes around 30-40 minutes for the restoration process and the patient is allowed to go back home. Full recovery can be attained within weeks after the procedure.
- Hymen Reconstruction: If the remaining hymen tissue is not enough for stitching, a hymenoplasty surgery may be done. For hymen reconstruction, the doctor will harvest live tissue from your body to reconstruct your hymen. Generally, the best-matched tissues will be found in the inner labia. Even this procedure is done on an outpatient basis and the surgery requires only a couple of hours. The patient can go back to normal life in 3-4 days.Although, after a hymen reconstruction you should abstain from sexual intercourse for three months. When recovered fully, it will fully function like a hymen including bleeding and a sensation of discomfort while tearing.
- Alloplant technique: When there are no suitable tissues in the body for hymen reconstruction, an artificial method can come to the rescue. An alloplant is a chemically processed biomaterial. It is often used in transplantation. In the alloplant technique of hymenoplasty surgery, instead of an actual hymen, an alloplant is inserted. It will give the tear-through experience just like a hymen . This is the last option when nothing else is possible.
