How Acne scars form?
Acne is a chronic inflammatory skin disease caused by an outbreak of skin lesions, commonly referred to as pimples. Acne usually appears on the neck, back, face, shoulders, and chest. It is the most common skin problem of teenagers.
Acne happens when oil glands of the skin create too much sebum, an oily substance that leads to clogged pores. It can also form due to the rapid production of P. acnes bacteria.
Skin pores get clogged with excess oil, dead skin cells and bacteria. When pressure increases inside acne due to overfilling of pus, a breakthrough happens in the wall. Pus enters the surrounding skin tissue and causes deeper lesions. The skin tries to repair this lesion by forming a scar.
Different Types of Acne Scars:
Icepick Scars:
The best way to describe icepick is like a little depression on your skin; they almost look like someone took a small needle and pierce your skin. The popular way to treat this is through Dot chemical peels that cause the skin to heal and close openings. However, chemical peel procedures should carefully performed because they can make some scars worse. Icepick scars may be difficult to treat, but you can manage them using the same laser and surface treatment methods.
Rolling Scars:
Imagine rolling meadows – that’s how your skin would look if you have rolling scars. If your skin is rolling or wave-like a scar, you may have rolling acne scars. They tend to be shallow. So if you need to stretch the skin surface, it might be challenging to say that they are there.
They are almost always the result of deep inflammatory acne cysts filled with pus, which were not treated in time. Since acne goes deep into the fat layer under the skin, there is often hollowness of cheeks along with scarring. Unfortunately, this type of scar can become more apparent and worse with age because your skin loses its natural firmness and elasticity.
Laser, subcision, and filler treatments are common ways to treat rolling scars.
Boxcar Scars:
With inflammatory acne (papules and red pustules, inflamed, irritated), boxcar scars are an unfortunate general consequence. They are usually flat but have sharper edges. The Boxcar scar almost looks like someone pushed a nail right into your skin.
Microneedle RF treats this type of scar.
Keloid Acne Scars :
Keloid scars are different from all other scars. In others, there is a depression or hole in the skin, but keloid scars are excessively pink elevated scars. These forms when the body tries to heal after acne, but your body inadvertently produces too much scar.
To treat them, the first way to attack keloids is usually a cortisone injection, but this is not a guaranteed way to make it smaller. Topical and retinol laser treatments can also be applied to keloids after they get flattened. Keloids can remove surgically, but there is a high chance of regrowth.
Pigmented Acne Spots:
Pigmented acne spots can be as undesirable as acne scars. Pigmented spots happen those with darker skin types -so very common in our area. In such skin types, the smallest pimple can leave jet black spot which can stay for months if untreated. Often these spots are found in association with other types of scars, and treatment of spots is different from that of scars.

Microneedling RF:
RF microneedling also provides radiofrequency energy deep into the dermis at depth 1-4 mm through fine needles. Needle depth and RF energy is adjusted by doctor according to scar depth. RF energy produces pinpoint heating deep into the dermis till the bottom of scar. Heat breaks down the scars in dermis and stimulates skin to produce more collagen. New collagen tightens the skin and scar depth reduces.
Treatment Process:
Skin looks tighter and less scared after the treatment. Maximum results are seen after several sessions.
Fractional CO2 Laser:
Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing:
Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing is a world famous established treatment of acne scars and skin wrinkles. Laser beams enter the skin upto 1 mm deep and make pinpoint areas of heating. The heating causes pillars of microburn injury. Skin reacts by producing more collages and thus scar is reduced and skin becomes smoother.
Treatment Process: Skin preparation for 1 month is done before starting C02 laser. Skin preparation is done with anti pigment creams. Preparation is essential before laser for avoiding the side effect of darker pigmentation. Initially 3 sessions are advised at 1 monthly intervals and after seeing the response further sessions are added.
Treatment takes 1 hour of anaesthesia cream application to numb the skin and 15-20 min to treat acne scars. Procedure may have mild discomfort. After procedure skin looks pink and spotty. Depending on the depth of treatment 7-10 days may be required for skin to look normal and heal and you will need to stay indoors and avoid sun strictly.
Skin looks tighter and less scared after the treatment. Maximum results are seen after several sessions. Sunscreen usage is compulsory throughout acne scar treatment.
Chemical Peeling:
Chemical peels are acidic solutions applied to the affected skin area. By penetrating the skin, the solution destroys dead skin and allows new skin to regenerate.
There are 2 main types of peels we use at Ambrosia Clinic
Treatment process: Its a 3 step process-cleaning the skin, applying the peel solution and leaving it on for a set time, and finally cleaning and neutralizing the peel. Process is painless and no anaesthesia is required. Mild tingling and burning sensation can happen for a short time. After peels skin looks fresh but starts peeling after 2-3 days. peeling lasts for 5-6 days. After complete peeling new skin is visible. Chemical peeling is done every 3 weeks until maximum results are achieved.
Benefits of chemical peels on acne-prone skin include:
Soft Tissue Fillers:
Selected acne scars can be filled up by injections of hyaluronic acid. These are painless injections which are given into the depressed and scarred area to reduce skin unevenness.
