pCloud is for people who want a sizable cloud library available in Windows File Explorer without storing every file on their computer. Its desktop app presents account contents as a virtual drive, making cloud files accessible alongside local folders while conserving disk space.
For daily use, pCloud lets you browse that drive and open files when needed; files occupy local space when opened or marked for offline use, along with a cache. You can also choose folders for two-way synchronization, so changes are kept between the computer and the cloud.
How the virtual drive works
pCloud Drive mounts the account as a separate drive letter in File Explorer. The contents remain in the cloud until you access them, rather than being copied wholesale to the PC. This setup is useful when you want a broad collection of documents or media visible in the familiar file manager but do not want it to consume equivalent local storage.
Files that need to be available without an internet connection can be marked for offline use. For folders that should remain present on both the computer and pCloud, the app provides a separate synchronization option. These choices let users decide which material should stream from cloud storage and which should also be kept locally.
Backup, sharing, and media
Backup tools let you send folders from the computer to pCloud and restore earlier file versions. This provides a way to keep selected computer folders in the cloud without treating them as ordinary two-way synced folders. The app also supports shared links protected by passwords and upload requests that allow others to send files.
Music and video stored in the account can be played using pCloud’s built-in players. This makes the virtual drive useful for accessing a media collection as well as documents, while the option to keep selected files offline can help when local access is needed.
Storage and encryption choices
The freeware plan offers up to 10 GB of storage, although the full amount is not available immediately after sign-up. Paid subscription and one-time lifetime plans cover storage from 500 GB to 10 TB. pCloud is based in Switzerland, and its desktop app is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux; the service also supports Android, iOS, and use through a web browser.
Zero-knowledge client-side encryption is separate from the standard storage features and requires the paid pCloud Encryption add-on. It creates a Crypto folder for files that use this encryption. Other files receive encryption on pCloud’s servers, so users who require end-to-end encryption for all stored material should account for this distinction.
Getting started
After installing pCloud Drive, sign in to an existing account or create one. The virtual drive then appears in File Explorer as a separate drive letter. Folder synchronization and computer backups are configured afterward in the app’s settings, where users can choose what to keep in sync or back up.
In practice, pCloud is best suited to people who value a cloud library that remains visible in File Explorer while using little local disk space. Its streaming, offline-access, backup, and sharing options serve different file-access needs, while encryption beyond the standard server-side protection requires the separate paid add-on.
