Liposuction Surgery in Hyderabad

Liposuction, or simply lipo, is a type of fat-removal procedure from particular areas of the body used in plastic surgery.

There are three primary categories of people suitable for this surgery:

Category I: People with Nearly Normal Weight

Contrary to common perception these are the best candidates for liposuction.

  • Men and women of normal weight who mainly want to improve their body shape and contours.
  • People with fat deposits that are “trouble areas”, where exercise and diet seem not to have any effect, like love handles, abdomen, hips, arms.
  • People with good elasticity in their skin, so when the fat is removed, they will achieve a smooth appearance.

Safety: Safe
Results: Permanent

Category II: Moderately Overweight

This category consists of those who are 10 to 50 percent above their normal weight, with fat everywhere but relatively excessive in one or two body parts like hips, abdomen, thighs. These body parts can be selectively liposuctioned to bring in harmony with the rest of the body.

These people seek liposuction surgery because they are unable to get back in shape with their diet and exercise or they have a short-term slimming target in a few months for some important event.

Safety: Liposuction of fat from one or two areas at a time with limited fat removal is safe.
Results: Results will need to be maintained. If the basic reason for weight gain- an unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle remain, then the fat is bound to reaccumulate. Results are long lasting and can even improve if a person adopts a healthy lifestyle.

Category III: Grossly Obese

Those who are 30 to 100 percent or more above their ideal body weight are not good candidates for liposuction. These people have bulges everywhere, and sometimes they suffer from obesity-related conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and hypercholesterolemia. They want liposuction for weight reduction. This group does not benefit from liposuction even though liposuction is possible.

Safety: Liposuction is not meant for losing weight from the overall body. Expecting to lose more than 6 to 7 kgs of weight by liposuction can be risky.
Results: Poor, because the limited amount of fat that can be removed in one sitting will not give a satisfactory look. Unless they change their lifestyle drastically fat will come back.

Consultation

During the consultation, you need to freely discuss with Dr Priti about the parts of your body you want to be liposuctioned. If you want many areas of the body to be treated, then she can help you select 2 to 3 most important areas that can be treated in one sitting and you can have the rest of the areas done in subsequent sittings. She will also help you realistically determine how much fat can be removed in one sitting.

You can see the representative clinical pictures of patients to satisfy yourself about the procedure and ask any questions regarding the results, and possible risks of the surgery.

You should come to the consultation prepared to discuss your medical history. This will include information about any medical conditions, drug allergies, medical treatments you have received, previous surgeries, and medications. It is important for you to provide complete information. You will be asked about your lifestyle and pattern of weight gain/loss.
Routine diagnostic tests to assess your fitness for surgery and anaesthesia will be ordered.

Evaluation

Once you have decided to undergo liposuction surgery in Hyderabad at Ambrosia, you will be evaluated for your fitness for anaesthesia and surgery by Dr Priti or if necessary by the anaesthesiologist. Your diagnostic test reports will be studied and you will be examined by taking measurements and clinical photographs for your medical record.

Surgery

Before taking you inside the operation room, part to be liposuctioned will be marked with you standing to shape them to the desired size. The operation is under general or local anaesthesia or a combination of two, and it is pain-free.

After Surgery

After surgery, there will be gauze padding and compression garment on the operated part. You can drink water after 4 hours and have some snacks afterwards if you had general anaesthesia and sooner in case of local anaesthesia. You can walk and have normal dinner on the same evening.

Recovery

You will need some assistance initially. Many people light work in a week’s time. By the end of one month usually, you are feeling quite normal and ready to resume all normal activities.

About the Liposuction Surgery at Ambrosia clinic in Hyderabad

Going in for this surgery, one needs to remember that this procedure is not a weight-loss method but is a cosmetic procedure with subtle effects in reshaping and slimming specific areas of the body by removing excess fat deposits.

Areas of fat deposits are marked. After giving anaesthesia, those a few 3 to 4 mm size cuts are made around the area, and tumescent fluid is injected into the fat through the holes. Later with hollow metal cannulas (tubes) with holes near the tip are passed through the same holes into the fat (Under the skin and over the muscle). The cannulas are attached to a liposuction vacuum machine through a plastic tube. Due to the powerful suction of the machine and to and fro movement of the cannula, fat is broken down into small pieces and is sucked out into the jar attached to the machine in liquid form

FAQ

At what age can I consider getting liposuction surgery done?
You have to be at least 18 years old. Old age is no bar if the patient is fit for surgery.
Which parts of the body can be treated with Liposuction surgery?

Commonly treated areas are:

  • Cheeks, jowls and neck
  • Upper arms
  • Breast or chest areas
  • Back
  • Abdomen and waist
  • Hips and buttocks
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Inner knee
  • Calves and ankles
What is the safe upper limit for liposuction in one sitting?
ASAPS (American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) and several other world authorities recommend fat removal equivalent to 5-8 percent of body weight as an upper limit. That means five kgs can be safely removed from a 60 kilos person and 8 kilos from a 100 kilos person. Removal of more fat is occasionally done if the person is perfectly healthy and is willing to accept higher risk. This can be done only in a hospital with ultramodern support systems.
Liposuction of 500 ml or more fat is a major surgical procedure and is safe when done by a qualified person in a hospital with good anaesthetic and ICU facilities. In the absence of the above mentioned, even smaller liposuction can be risky.
How much scarring should I expect after liposuction?
Small 3 to 4 mm cuts used for liposuction are made in hidden areas. Therefore scars are not a big concern. A spot like marks lightens with time.
What are the possible risks to expect in Liposuction surgery?
Fat is superficial, and given that liposuction removes only fat, this is a relatively safe surgery. Bleeding, infection and reactions to anaesthesia are some risks common to all surgeries. Uncommonly there can be asymmetry, depressions, waviness, pigmentation prolonged numbness after surgery. You can help to lessen certain risks by following the advice and instructions of your plastic surgeon, both before and after surgery.
What are the safety measures of this procedure dependent on?

The main metrics of safety for this procedure are:

  • The amount of fat Removed: Fat removal within 5-8 % of body weight in a single sitting is considered safe.
  • Person’s Health: In people with diabetes/hypertension and other risk factors more precautions are required.
  • Training of Surgeon: Qualified plastic surgeon trained in liposuction is recommended.
  • Hospital Facilities: Complete monitoring is recommended. Larger the liposuction more the facilities needed, including ICU facility in the hospital.
What should I expect right after surgery?

Liposuctioned parts are covered in padding for the first two days post the surgery since the liposuction holes are left open usually, and there is a discharge of blood stained fluid which is soaked by padding. You will be wearing a stretchable tight garment on the operated part. Your dressings will be changed after two days in the doctor’s clinic. You can have a shower from the 4th day after surgery and can remove your dressings and wash your whole body. You will be given instructions about self-dressing at home after bath everyday.

Initially, you will notice the treated area is swollen and sometimes with black and blue patches. The area may also feel numb and tender. You will wear a support garment for 4-6 weeks until the swelling and discoloration diminish. There are no stitches.

  • Normal Food: Same day
  • Dressing Change: After 48 hours
  • Bath: 4th day
  • Pain: 1 week (Relieved with Painkiller Medications)
  • Self Dressing: For ten days
  • Skin Discoloration: 2 -3 weeks
  • Swelling: 1 month
  • Tenderness: Mild for 1-2 months
  • Support Garment: 6 weeks or more
  • Numbness: weeks or months
What results can I expect after liposuction?
If you have any bulges showing through your clothes, they flatten after the procedure and your body looks streamlined. You can get a flat abdomen if your abdominal muscles are strong. You will lose inches at the liposuctioned part, and the rest of the body will remain the same. You also lose weight equivalent to or less than the amount of fat liposuctioned.
When should I expect to see the final results of the procedure?
Liposuction cuts are few and small and heal in a week, but internal healing after liposuction goes on for months. The fat that is broken and removed is gradually replaced with tough fibrous tissue which shrinks over next 3-6 months. The improvement in inches is nil in the first two weeks, 30-40 percent in one month and 90 percent in 3 months and 100 percent in 6 months.
What changes can I expect in my body during the healing period after liposuction?
  • First 15 days: Tenderness, numbness, swelling, bruising and no significant improvement in size. Soreness of muscles on movement.
  • 15 days to 1 month: Clothes become looser, skin looks normal in colour, you can feel hardness and lumps if you press the liposuctioned part. Numbness persists. During this time you may feel occasional discomfort and pain, especially after exertion. You can take care of that by taking a painkiller pill and resting.
  • 1 to 6 months: Numbness, hardness gradually returns to normal. Further reduction in inches and size up to 6 months provided you maintain a healthy lifestyle by regular moderate exercise and healthy diet.
When can I buy new clothes in a smaller size after the liposuction procedure?
Realistically, you should wait for at least six weeks.
What are the best methods to reduce the scarring after the procedure?
Scars can be gradually eliminated by anti-scar creams, gels prescribed by your doctor.
How long do the results last?
Results are permanent if you maintain your body weight by a sensible and healthy lifestyle.
For how long do I need to consult the doctor after the procedure?
You will need to return to the clinic for follow-up care at prescribed intervals, usually two days, two weeks, one month and then three months later. At these visits, your progress will be evaluated, and minor problems are taken care of. You are not charged for follow-up visits after surgery till one year.

Please remember that the relationship with your plastic surgeon does not end when you leave the operating room. If you have questions or concerns during your recovery or need additional information at a later time, you should contact Dr Priti.

What is injection lipolysis? Can it remove fat without surgery?
Injection lipolysis technique uses a chemical substance which can be injected into the fatty deposits and is said to dissolve fat. Only very small fatty deposits can be treated by this, and multiple sittings are required. This technique is not as popular as liposuction due to its limitations.
Can fat be removed without surgery by external application of ultrasound waves?
Such machines have recently come into the market, but their results are not proven. Since ultrasound waves are short form waves and do not penetrate too deep, multiple sittings may be required before any noticeable results are visible.
What is ultrasonic and vaser liposuction?
In Ultrasonic Liposuction, the cannula emits ultrasound waves, which helps in breaking down the fat. Vaser Liposuction is an advanced and safer form of ultrasound liposuction. This helps in doing the liposuction procedure with significantly less blood loss.
What is tumescent liposuction?
In tumescent liposuction, a special fluid is injected into fat before sucking it out. Advantages are less bleeding and easier liposuction and can also be used to administer local anaesthesia. Modern liposuction always involves the injection of fluid before liposuction and this is the procedure followed at Ambrosia.
Will liposuction of the abdomen cause problems with pregnancy in the future?
Liposuction addresses only the fat in the treated areas, therefore this does not complicate chances of pregnancy after the procedure.
Is liposuction a major or minor surgery?
Even though liposuction cuts are small and there are no stitches, liposuction is in every other way like any other major surgery. Removal of fat causes trauma to tissue under the skin in the area liposuctioned and that part takes the time to heal from inside. Liposuction is usually done under general anaesthesia. Even if liposuction is done under local anaesthesia it is not a minor surgery.
How much rest do I need after liposuction of the arms?
You can go home after surgery. However, you will have an elastic garment on your arms which you will have to wear for a month. It can be hidden inside long sleeves. You can join back at work in 4-7 days. Swelling disappears in 4-6 weeks. Arm exercises can be done after one month.
Is my arm skin going to sag after fat removal?
Skin quality can be assessed before surgery. If the skin has a reasonably good tone, it will shrink. Special cannulas and techniques can be used to minimise the risk of sagging. If there is sagging and stretch marks already and if you are older with thinner skin, there is a chance of sagging. We, at Ambrosia add BodyTite RF skin tightening at the same time as liposuction to tighten the skin in the treated areas.
I am slim overall, but my thighs have bulges that look awkward in jeans. Trousers that fit the thighs are loose at the waist. Can liposuction help remove these bulges permanently?
Yes, liposuction can remove those bulges and give you permanent results.
How much rest will I need after thigh liposuction?
You can go home after surgery if the fat removal is limited. You will have an elastic garment on your thighs which you will have to wear for a month. It can be hidden inside trousers. You can join back at work in 4-7 days. Swelling disappears in 4-6 weeks. Leg exercises can be done after one month.
What is arm or thigh lift?

An arm lift is sometimes needed for sagging arms after massive weight loss. Liposuction alone will not help because there is excess skin, which is removed through a cut in the armpit or down the arm.

A thigh lift is sometimes needed for sagging thighs after massive weight loss. Liposuction alone will not help because there is excess skin. Thigh skin is lifted up and removed along with liposuction.

My lower jaw area is heavy and I have a clear double chin. If I want a well-defined jawline, can I get liposuction done on my face?

Yes, liposuction can help you achieve your goals without visible scars. If you are over 40 and have a lot of loose skin, you may require FACETITE tightening as well as facelift.

How much rest is required after face/ neck liposuction?
You can go home after surgery. You will have an elastic chin strap which you will have to wear for a month. You can join back at work in 4 to 7 days. Swelling disappears in 4 to 6 weeks.
Are there any risks of liposuction of the face/neck?
There is a very small risk of injury to certain branches of the facial nerves resulting in temporary drooping of the lower lip. This is however uncommon and usually temporary.
I am a 30 yr old male with an active lifestyle. I exercise regularly but still cannot get rid of the fat on my abdomen. Can liposuction give me a flat abdomen? Will it be permanent?
By liposuction, the unwanted fat deposits can be removed, and if you continue to maintain your present lifestyle, the result will be permanent.
I am a mother of two and since then my tummy bulge refuses to go. I am eager to get back in shape. Can I have liposuction of my tummy area?
After childbirth usually, there are stretch marks and skin as well as the muscle of the abdomen begin sagging. There is excess fat too which can be removed by liposuction. You will need to get the excess skin and muscle tightened by additional tummy tuck procedure for best results.
Someone I know has had liposuction done, but still looks obese. Has his liposuction failed?
If a very small amount of fat is removed from an obese body, the difference is unlikely to be noticeable. Also if the person’s lifestyle is unhealthy- no exercise, excess food, then he may not be able to maintain results. All this can be assessed before surgery and removal of an appropriate amount of fat from the right places is very important.
I am a 22 yr old male and have a very prominent chest (almost like a female). I have tried losing weight but there is no change. Can liposuction remove all that fat?

Your condition is called gynecomastia where your breast gland is enlarged. Liposuction can partially reduce the chest, but usually, additional removal of the firm gland is required by gynecomastia surgery.

I am a 20 yr old female with large breasts that are embarrassing. Can I have them reduced in size with liposuction?

Breasts are not pure fat. There is a harder gland part also which can not come out in liquid form through liposuction cannulas. Therefore only small reduction is possible by liposuction. You should consider the option of breast reduction surgery.

After having two children, my breasts have become very small, but I have excess fat around my waist and thighs? If I get liposuction done in those areas, can the same fat be injected to enlarge my breasts?

Liposuctioned fat can always be injected elsewhere. Fat transfer into breasts and buttocks can help enhance your body shape.
