Do those puffy under eyes bother you every morning? What are these ‘bags’ and why do they ruin your mirror moment every morning?

The skin under your eyes is the thinnest in comparison to the rest of you and mostly hollow under. Known as tear troughs, these areas are the first to be affected by changes in tissue and muscle structure. As we grow older, the tissues around the eyes weaken including the muscles that support the eyelids. The skin may begin to sag and the fat that is usually around the eyes moves into the area and causes swelling. There are usually 3 fat pads in each lower eyelid, but in some cases one or two of them show as under eye bags. This usually happens as we age. However, young people may have under eye puffiness too when the space is filled with fluid retention. Usually far more pronounced in the morning, they gradually reduce through the day due to draining out of the fluids with gravity.

However, these are mostly a cosmetic concern and rarely a sign of a serious condition. We ensure top-of-the-line treatment possibilities with:

1. Transconjunctival blepharoplasty

This is a non-scarring surgical procedure where the fat pads in the under eye area are removed through the inner lower eyelid.

2. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty

This is a surgery for severe bagging when there is also extra skin. Here both bags and extra skin are removed

3. Juvederm

Juvederm injections can reduce or totally hide the mild to moderate undereye bags. Juvederm results are immediate and last 1-1.5 years.

FAQ

Can under eye bags be prevented?

A healthy lifestyle is always the best prevention for most diseases and although not a disease, under eye bags too falls into the same preventive care category. Get between 7-9 hrs of sleep every night, sleep with your head slightly elevated to prevent fluids from pooling in the area, stay hydrated and minimise your sodium intake by avoiding salty foods. All these help avoid fluid retention.

Medically speaking, keeping your blood pressure in check and treating hypothyroidism may also help.

How do I know which is the best treatment for me - Juvederm injections or surgery?

An experienced plastic surgeon who has worked on both possibilities can help assess and choose the best line of treatment for your condition. Usually Juvederm injections are good for older cases and for more advanced cases surgery is suggested. Your consultation with one of our aestheticians will help you gain a clear understanding of the down time, pros and cons of each treatment and make informed choices.

Are the eyes at risk from this treatment?

Both injection and surgery are safe treatments in the hands of an experienced plastic surgeon. The treatment options are:

  • Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty
  • Juvederm® XC
  • Lower eyelid surgery
