Why does a face lose its youthful look?

As we enter our middle age,  (30s and 40s) the face loses its protein on the skin (collagen) and become weaker this causes formation of lines on the forehead (frontalis) and on the corner of the eyes (crows feet) which make you look old, angry and unhappy.

The science behind the ageing process of face…

The human face has 43 muscles for various important functions. Out of these, 17 muscles are of facial expressions. Most of these muscles are paired muscles which are arranged symmetrically on the face. The muscles in the right and left side of the face work in synchrony we make facial expressions.  Facial nerve charges all these muscles of facial expressions.

Do you know our face ages faster when we are sad or frowning?

We think our facial expressions are voluntary, and we express when we want to – but not always! A lot of times facial muscles work without our knowledge and produce expressions that we may not be feeling consciously. A person is sometimes frowning and putting out our lower lip without his or her knowledge. Frown lines make the person look angry, stressed and unhappy.

Excessive exposure to the sun also adds up in ageing quicker!

The hard light and heat of the sun make us squint and frown involuntarily,  resulting in lines being formed on the forehead and wrinkles around the eyes. Some people express a lot of their eyebrows which also start to droop, due to the loss of elasticity in the skin above and under the eyebrows.

What happens when you frown?

Think about the lower middle part of your forehead, just above your unibrow. Is there any tension? Are you concerned or worried about something? This muscle is called the ‘corrugator supercilii’ (a pyramid shaped muscle that is located close to the eyes). When you frown, this muscle pulls both your eyebrows downwards almost meeting each other. This makes the skin of the forehead wrinkle (it corrugates your forehead skin). It gets used to expressing displeasure, anger, worry and many other negative emotions. The mind gets used to it so much that even when your smile muscles are fixed, it immediately reverses the muscles and corrugates the skin turning your smile into a frown.

Even Bill Clinton frowns!

Other similar lines are horizontal forehead lines that happen due to the action of forehead muscle ” frontalis “. Crow’s feet are fine lines at the outer corner of eyes that are caused by the orbicular muscle surrounding the eyelids.  Horizontal forehead lines and excessive crow’s feet lines are unattractive and make one look older.

Damage is done even before you realise!

In youth when the skin is strong, and muscles are supple these lines do not show. In the thirties and forties, the skin loses its collagen and becomes weaker. Muscles of the face, on the other hand, get stronger due to repeated expressions and they do not completely relax ever. As a result, one ends up having these lines permanently.

Botox – the easy, safest and powerful solution

Botox is a drug made of a neurotoxin produced by the bacteria called Clostridium botulinum.Botox is injected in minute measured quantities into the specific muscles, with small needles and Botox relaxes that particular muscle for 3-5 months. It is reversible, and after the mentioned time, the muscle starts working normally again.

Botox is injected into the muscle and relaxes the muscle. Botox does not interfere with other expressions and functions, so Botox is a perfect remedy for unwanted lines.Effect of Botox lasts for 3-5 months and after muscle wakes up again. Repeat Botox again after 3-5 months. This can be continued as long as desired for years. Effects of Botox are temporary.

If the right amount of Botox (measured in units) is injected into the right muscle, the results are natural only lines are erased, and expressions are intact. Removal of unwanted lines makes one look relaxed, calm, happy, attractive and young.

How does Botox work?

Botox has proven to be a successful and valuable remedy. Botox injected to humans in small concentrations works by preventing signals from nerve cells reaching muscles to contract, therefore paralysing them. In order for muscles to contract nerves release acetylcholine(a neurotransmitter) at the junction where nerve endings meet muscle cells. The acetylcholine attaches on receptors of muscle and cause contract or shorten. Injected Botox prevents the release of acetylcholine which prevents contraction of the muscle.

How long does the effect of Botox last?

In general, the right amount of Botox is injected by a skilled cosmetologist in the right muscles; results can last 3-4 months. First users might experience Botox last in less than three months. Botox lasts longer than few weeks, but it varies. When it is done regularly over the course of few years, Botox can last up to 9 months.
