5 Steps to a head full of hair

Step One: Consultation
During the consultation, the exact extent of your baldness and quality of your hair will be assessed. The number of grafts required and where they will be placed is planned. Cyclic medicine treatment for 2-4 months is usually recommended to strengthen the donor hair roots. This treatment is proven to improve the result of hair transplantation.

Step Two: Preoperative Evaluation
After 2-4 months of cyclic medicine therapy hair transplantation procedure can be planned. Routine blood tests are advised. You will be given the consent forms for signing and will be given detailed preoperative instructions in writing.

Step Three: Surgery
You report at the clinic on the morning of surgery. You will need to have light breakfast and hair wash before coming to clinic.

At clinic donor hair area at the back of the head is marked and that strip like area is shaved
Antiseptic hair wash is given. Then you are shifted to operation area where you first lie on your stomach on operation table. Local anaesthesia is injected in the head skin for painless removal of hair strip. Then a strip of scalp (head skin) including the hair growing on it, is removed (cut out). The gap is closed with hidden buried stitches. In the end there is a line like scar . But there are no stitches to be removed and no bald area.

The donor skin strip containing hair is processes by trained assistants . Hair follicles are dissected – making individual hair follicles ready for transplanting.

After this you lie comfortably on table on your back or in reclining position. Once again local anaesthesia is injected into the forehead to make your procedure painless. Then individual follicles are planted into the bald area or in between the hair in balding area. Tiny holes are created with injection needle and hair follicle is planted into the holes one by one.

The whole procedure can take 3-6 hrs or more depending on the number of grafts used. You are allowed breaks for lunch and for restroom. You are conscious and comfortable during the procedure. You can sleep off , watch TV or listen to music during the surgery.

Step Four: After Surgery
You can wear cap to protect the grafts from dust. A small dressing will be there on the back of your head which you can remove yourself after 2 days. There will nor be any head bandage. You look practically same as before except the tiny hair roots and scabs on the grafted area. You can leave soon after surgery in a car/cab. You will be given list of antibiotics and pain tablets for 5 days along with care instructions.

Step Five: Recovery and Final Result
Pain is moderate to minimal after surgery .There is some swelling on forehead and around the eyes for 2-3 days .The donor area on the back does not require any stitch removal or special care. It is not apparent to others . Only telltale sign of hair transplantation is small tiny spots (scabs) at the grafted bald area of head. You can either wear a cap to avoid questions or else stay at home for 10 days, by which time the scabs fall off and head looks completely natural. New hair is very small (just a few millimeters) so you look as before surgery. These implanted hair fall off in a couple of weeks. The implanted roots are intact and they start growing new hair after completion of 4 months. Then the new hair grows longer at the rate of 1 cm (averagely) per month. As each hair grows longer and thicker the overlap of adjacent hair gives appearance of increasing density. Final look and density is achieved by the end of one year.

» For more information read FAQ's on Hair Transplantation:

Q. Where do the transplanted hair come from?
Ans: Transplanted hair is borrowed from backside of your own head (donor area).

Q. Are transplanted hair permanent?
Ans: Yes

Q. Do transplanted hair look natural? Do they grow?
Ans: Transplanted hair is your own . So they look natural, grow naturally and can be cut and styled normally.

Q. Would I look natural and normal after hair transplant or people can tell that my hair is transplanted?
Ans: Modern transplant techniques (follicular unit micrografting) and aesthetic hairline designing techniques ensure a totally natural look.

Q. Are there any visible scars after hair transplantation?

Ans: There are no visible scars . The donor are at the back when closed with proper plastic surgical stichless technique, leads to a line like scar which is covered with hair, without any baldness.

Q. How many sittings of hair transplantation are required?
Ans: Usually 1 or 2 sittings required in a routine case depending mainly on the size of your balding area.
Usually transplant involves 1000- 3000 follicular units transfer in one sitting. If your bald area is small it can be filled satisfactorily in one sitting. If you have larger area of baldness and thinning you can opt for two sittings .In first sitting priority area like frontal baldness can be covered and in second sitting (after 6 months) the top of the head can be covered.

Q. Does the back of the head (donor area) from where hair is taken, become bald.
Ans: No, it does not.

Q. What is the best age for hair transplantation?
Ans: Anyone from 18-80 yrs of age can have hair transplantation done.

Q. Is hair transplantation surgery safe?

Ans: Hair transplantation surgery is done under local anaesthesia , under standard operation theatre conditions. The surgery is very superficial going only a few millimeters into the skin. It is safe.

Q. Can I go bald again after hair transplantation?

Ans: The transplanted hair grafts are permanent. But the original hair may continue to fall in some cases. So if the hair is grafted on the front and you lose some original hair on top of head, you may need another sitting for covering the new bald area. Before and after transplant “cyclic medicine

Hair fall Treatmen

t” helps to reduce or stop further fall of hair.

Q. What is Cyclic medicine therapy?
Ans: “Cyclic medicine therapy” is popularized by leading hair transplant surgeon Dr Rajesh Rajput. His studies have proved that intake of certain vitamins, minerals, essential aminoacids and fatty acids in twice weekly dosage (on rotation) along with local care of scalp with minoxidil and specific shampoos strengthens and thickens existing hair, reduces hairfall and helps to grow new hair. Enzyme blocker Finasteride is added in low dosage (1mg) twice weekly instead of daily. Cyclic twice weekly intake of combination ensures virtually no side effect and optimal result – making it safe and ideal for long term usage.
“Cyclic medicine therapy” makes the hair well nourished and strong-to withstand all causes of hairfall like pollution, stress, diet and other deficiencies.

Q. How long do I need to take cyclic medications before and after hair transplant?
Ans: Cyclic medicines are started 2-4 months before surgery to strengthen and prepare the hair for transplantation. After transplant 2 years of medical treatment is ideal.

Q. What is the cause of baldness?
Ans: Most of the times baldness is genetic from fathers or sometimes from mother’s side. A lot of times it is seen that the son is balder for his age than his father. Subtle change in body’s internal composition of hormones and nutrition is the cause. Modern diet is rich in calories but deficient in nutrients. Pollution , stress etc are other causes. Most of the times extensive testing for hormones etc is not recommended because most often the hormone and other parameters are found to be normal. The hair root itself is the culprit. Hair root that is weak or extrasensitive to any stress like dieting, change of water, normal hormones etc- falls at the gentlest of the shove.

Q. Is excess male hormone the cause of baldness?
Ans: Its not the real excess of male hormone (testosterone) but excess sensitivity of hair root to DHT (a product of male hormone), that causes hair loss in men. Low dosage of enzyme bocker (finasteride) which stops conversion of testosterone to DHT helps in hair fall.

Q. Who is the ideal candidate for hair transplantation?
Ans: Ideal candidate for hair transplantation is someone whose baldness has stabilized, usually 25 years and older, has healthy and dense donor hair, good donor to bald area ratio and realistic expectations.

Q. Who are poor candidates for hair transplantation?
Ans: Anyone who has donor hair available and has diseasefree normal skin in bald area can have a successful transplantation. When donor hair is thin, donor hair patch is small relative to extensive bald area, quite understandably, only limited improvement will be possible.

Q. Can females also have hair transplantation done?
Ans. If medical treatment has not helped, transplantation can be done.

Q. Can white hair also be transplanted?
Ans: Yes, white hair can be transplanted.

Q. Can some other person’s hair be transplanted (like Kidney transplant)?
Ans: Technically this is possible. But practically it is not done because a lot of immunosuppression of body will be needed and it would not be not safe or justified for a cosmetic surgery procedure.

Q. Can artificial hair be transplanted?
Ans: Synthetic hair transplantation has been tried but was proven to be unsafe. Therefore it is not recommended.

Q. What is the solution for those who do not have good donor hair?
Ans: In such a situation hair patch or wig is the only solution at present. Stem cell research is in process , which aims at collecting stem cells from person’s own fat (obtained by liposuction) and injecting them into scalp to grow new hair.

Q. How many hair can be transplanted in one sitting?
Ans: Upto 3000 -4000 hair can be transplanted in a single sitting depending on various factors.

Q. What is "follicular unit micrografting"?
Ans: Hair on scalp normally grows in bunches (called follicular units). A random arrangement of single hair, 2 hair, 3 hair and 4 hair follicular units is seen in normal scalp. Follicular unit of different hair numbers( 1-4) is used as an individual graft in follicular unit micrografting technique. Therefore if 1000 grafts (follicular units) have been implanted it may mean 1000, 2000 or even 3000 hair in different individuals- depending on how many follicular units have multiple hair. This technique involves usage of magnification for visualizing tiny follicles and microinstruments for delicate handling.

Q. Do hair transplant results vary?
Ans: Yes, results may vary from person to person and also from surgeon to surgeon. Results also vary depending on person’s compliance with postoperative treatment.

Q. Do all transplanted hair grow?
Ans: More than 90 percent of grafts survive usually.

Q. Is oil head massage useful for hair growth? Does shaving of head help in hair growth?

Ans: No, neither massage, nor head shaving helps in growing more hair.

Q. How much does

hair transplantation cost

Ans: Hair transplantation Cost is Rs 50/- (USD 1.1 approx) per follicular unit (containing 1to 4 hairs). Hair transplantation Cost may vary based on the treatment. It is different from person to person.
