Frequently Asked Questions - Facelift

» At what age can I go for facelift?
Aging is variable and varies from person to person. Race, genetics, general health and history of weight loss play important role. Europeans and North Americans need facelift earlier than Indians or Africans. People who have had fluctuations in weight tend to have more facial sagging. Generally facelift is done for people 40 years and older. People in limelight tend to get it done earlier so that the change is subtle and natural, not drastic.

» Are there going to be visible scars?
The portion of scar in front of the ear and behind it may be visible in pulled back hairstyles. People usually cover it with changed hairstyle and concealer. With time the scar fades naturally and is visible only on close inspection.

» Will everyone know that I had a facelift?
People will notice that you look refreshed and younger.

» How much time it takes for complete recovery?
Amount of time it takes for recovery varies greatly among individuals. Any bandages and drain tubes will usually be removed in one or two days. At that time, you will notice puffiness and discoloration which may be more in some portions of your face than others. Do not be alarmed by any unevenness or temporary asymmetry caused by this variance in swelling and bruising, which is perfectly normal. Generally, the greatest amount of swelling occurs 24 to 48 hours after surgery, but it may take several weeks before all puffiness is resolved. Most bruising will disappear within two weeks. After a few days, you will be permitted to wear makeup which will help conceal any discoloration. You will also experience some numbness in the facial area, which may be present for several weeks or longer. Your stitches will be removed from four to seven days after surgery.

» What precautions will be needed after surgery?
After surgery, you will be asked to restrict your activities and simply relax for a few days. Elevating your head when you sleep will help to minimize swelling and bruising. Remember, you must not take aspirin or certain anti-inflammatory medications, and you should not smoke or be exposed to heavy secondary smoke for a while.

» I understand that every surgical procedure has risks, what are the risks of facelift?
Possible risks are hematoma (an accumulation of blood under the skin that may require removal), infection , healing problems, reactions to anaesthesia. Injury to underlying facial nerves is possible, though it is usually only temporary. Facelift incisions are most often inconspicuous, but bad scarring is possible in some individuals due to individual variations.

» Are there other alternatives to facelift for younger individuals?
A lot of people in their twenties and thirties request for facelift. They do not really have excess skin, but have early signs of aging like fine wrinkles, hollowness of cheeks, nasolabial grooves, double chin etc. These problems can be addressed with , TM, , , and thread lift. Single or combination of these procedures may be needed depending on individual assessment. These procedures are scarless.

» How long does the result last?
Result lasts for 5-10 years.

» My lower face looks young but forehead and eyes show aging. Do I need a facelift?
Facial aging can occur at different levels in different parts of body. You may benefit by and TM.

» I am takingBotulinum toxininjectionsTM for wrinkles around my eye and on forehead. Now I am considering a facelift. Will I need to do Botulinum toxin after facelift?

» What changes can I expect in my face after facelift?
Maximum benefit of facelift surgery is seen at jawline. Sagging or bulging jawline becomes sharp and well defined. Under chin fat and sagging and vertical neck bands also are treated resulting in youthful lower face and neck. The folds running from side of nose to corner of mouth (nasolabial folds) are softened. Cheeks are also lifted up and skin over cheeks becomes smooth.

» What other procedures can be done along with facelift to rejuvenate the total face?
Forehead lift –to lift up the forehead, upper and lower eyelid surgery, chin or cheek implants and fat injections into the face are some commonly combined procedures. After facelift, Botulinum toxin injections, chemical peels and laser resurfacing may be required in some individuals for complete effect.

» I am 55 years old and interested in looking younger, but I do not want major surgery and scars. What are my options?
, TM, , , implants and thread lift are the alternatives to facelift. The overall result is not as drastic as facelift. Single or combination of these procedures may be needed depending on individual’s requirement. These procedures are scarless and can be done in individuals who are not fit for major anaesthesia.

» How is surgical facelift different from laser facelift?
These are 2 different things. Surgery removes the skin, fat and tightens the muscles. Laser resurfacing by CO2 laser can remove superficial wrinkles but can not do the other things. Milder laser rejuvenation procedures like IPL give even less result than CO2 laser, after multiple sittings. Younger people with early fine wrinkles of face without real sagging can opt for laser.

» What is thread lift and how does it compare to surgical face lift?
Special barbed threads are available (imported) that can be inserted under the skin through long needles under local anaesthesia. Multiple threads are required. The threads can pull the skin in desired direction. Advantages of threads are- no scars and no major surgery. Disadvantages are that result does not last very long and many threads are needed which can be expensive.

» I have heard of some beauty parlors offering facelift? What is that?
With some machine muscles are stimulated and facial massage is done. Understandably that is not a facelift.
